What are Custom Events?

Custom events are specific actions that users take on your website or app, such as making a purchase or adding an item to their cart. These events can be tracked using the Meta pixel or SDK, and the data is stored in Business Manager.

Using Custom Events for Ads Automation

If you have your custom events data in Business Manager that you'd like to use for ads automation in Bïrch, for example, pause underperforming ads, change the budget etc., you can do so by creating a Custom conversion based on a Custom event.

Creating a Custom Conversion

In order to use a Custom event for ads automation, you first need to create a Custom conversion based on that event. Here is how to do it:

  1. Click Custom conversions in the top-left menu

  2. Click Create custom conversion

  3. Enter a name for your custom conversion

  4. Select your data source

  5. Select your conversion event

    1. If you select All URL traffic or a custom event, you’ll see the option to Choose a standard event for optimization. Meta recommends that you keep the category they chose for you. If you want to choose a different category, select the one that best describes the conversion event you’re optimizing. Learn more about standard event categories in best practices.

    2. Set up a rule using a URL or Event parameters. You can select parameters that you currently send with the event you selected.

Note: Parameters follow the or condition. For example, if you create a custom conversion using a purchase event and type in Product A, Product B and Product C in the content_id parameter value, the custom conversion measures when someone purchases product A, B or C.

    3. Click + if you’d like to add more rules.

Note: Rules follow the and condition. For example, if you create 3 separate rules for content_id equals A, content_id equals B and content_id equals C, the custom conversion measures when all 3 events occur.

    4. Click Create.

  6. You've created a custom conversion!

Activate Your Custom Conversions

After you create your custom conversion, navigate to the page of your website it's referencing to trigger it. Then check the custom conversions tab in Events Manager to see if it worked (status is active).

Final Step

Now go to the Integrations page and under "Custom conversions" click the button “Sync conversions” to refresh the connection.

Once it’s done, the custom conversion should show up in rules and reports. Please note that it might take up 15 minutes for custom conversions to sync.
